That New 50

I had been debating upgrading my 50mm lens to the new Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 G for several months & finally pulled the trigger to get it.

It was somewhat of an impulse retail therapy type thing that made me feel pretty damn good at the time. And like most times after I purchase anything, buyers remorse set in.

To soothe my bout of buyer’s remorse, I spent some time purchasing some new fall/winter clothes. The rush I got from that got me over the feeling that I had about purchasing the lens.

I guess retail therapy is better than food therapy…

Anyway, my lens showed up today & I love it!  It’s not as beautiful as my Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 D but what it lacks in appearance, it makes up in performance.

This lens focuses super fast and it is virtually silent when focusing. At one point, I thought it was broke, although I say my subject fully focused.

The latest version of Nikon 50mm is also fat bastard. Much fatter and slightly taller than it’s predecessor.  So I guess bigger is better.

I have noticed smoother depth of field with the new model & I have also noticed sharper results when wide open at f/1.4. That is such a good thing.

While, I have not done much testing, I’m sold! So sold that I have officially decided to upgrade my Nikkor 85mm f/1.4D lens to the new G model.

And it feels good having a lens hood on the 50mm. That was one of my biggest complaints about the older model. Finding a lens hood that fit was a difficult task if you were not willing to settle for a rubber hood (yuck!).
