Music From The Diaspora: New Bell

Last week while in NYC not really enjoying Fashion’s Night Out, I stumbled upon a party tent hosted by Revlon in the meat packing district.

The party was quite lively with women getting makeovers, dancing in the streets & picture taking.

By the time I got into the tent, a lot of older passersby came in to dance to this hot disco song. Shit, if I was not in such a shitty mood from the fuckery that occurred earlier that night, I might have danced myself. So instead, I listened, watched and enjoyed.

A few minutes into this same hot disco song, a woman stated that she had not heard the song in over twenty plus years. A man dancing nearby echoed her sentiment & talked about how it was the club jam way back when.

I’m like, I’ve never heard this but I’m loving it. I asked them the name of the song & with much excitement they screamed “NEW BELL! “It’s by Manu Dibango the older man said you know that guy that made ‘Soul Makossa.’”

I then immediately go to iTunes on my phone to purchase it & of course it was not listed there. Bummer!

When I got back to my hotel, I also saw that it was not on eMusic either. Luckily, I’m resourceful & now own the song via other means.

“New Bell” is my new jam & my birthday theme song this year! BTW, my birthday is 9/19 & I’m registered at Nieman’s. Just saying.
